Uzbekistan.....a journey along the Silk Road...the caravan stops of Khiva, Bukhara and Samarkand with their mermerising, almost mystical skylines of mosques, minarets and medressas set against a backdrop of desert sands. Add to the mix... a paranoid police state born out of the collapse of the Soviet Union... corruption... the hangover of Soviet bureaucracy...desolate landscapes blighted by environmental disasters... a Central Asian country virtually unknown to the outsider.
